My Dog’s Smile
Until I met Guapo the smile of a dog wasn’t fully understood Unbounded joy,
dedicated to life’s daily necessities and pleasures – walking, running, skipping, bounding, retrieving, swimming, exploring, resting, riding in the car, eating (as only a Labrador retriever can!), and
his passion: the Golden Orb of Life He found them everywhere, materialized out of air, it seemed, and I saved every tennis ball He danced! Dignified, gentle and patient, with a great sense of humor A big-hearted lover of life True friend of dogs and mankind (he was a Therapy Dog)
Other creatures belonged in trees, he believed His imperfections endeared me also (we’re mostly loved because of these) The slightly turned-in left foot, tossing pine cones at my head, pleading with soft, sweet almond eyes for tastes of food (I always shared), and he chased fishing lines Wouldn’t sit in a boat…or a tent
Skunked almost every summer Incorrigible and dedicated retriever! It must be mentioned, he was truly handsome Exemplar of his breed Born wouldn’t you know in a town called Valentine Proud and happy I always was to be with him
He lives in my heart forever
